Fail: Holiday Episodes
The Thanksgiving episode worked (well… mostly — we weren’t wild about the Shawshank stuff), but the Scooby-Doo-style Halloween outing was scary for all the wrong reasons, while the Rope-influenced Christmas installment lacked any sort of seasonal cheer. Here’s a New Year’s resolution for a prospective Season 5: don’t do a New Year’s episode… or any other holiday for that matter.

Pass: Jim Rash
In a season where the central characters were often inconsistently written, Rash’s wacky Dean Pelton was a steady and reliable source of laughs from the beginning. Besides that, the Oscar-winning screenwriter also penned one of the season’s best outings, the body-switching-themed “Basic Human Anatomy.” He deserves a supporting Emmy nod for his Pelton-as-Jeff impression alone.

If nothing else, “Basic Human Anatomy” demonstrated the advantage of having an Oscar-winning screenwriter finally on your writing staff.

3. Chang (Community)
Before he became a sociopathic monster, Chang was just a funny Spanish teacher who had some great one-liners and quirky traits. Then he went crazy became more obnoxious than we ever could have imagined.

After stumbling out of the gate, Season 4 of Community aired what was probably its strongest episode to date last night… although, the fact that “Conventions of Space and Time” qualifies as “strong” tells you how rocky the show’s post-Harmon era has been so far.
